Popular attractions on Cologne city breaks

Cologne Cathedral
The Cathedral of St Peter and Maria was the biggest building project of the Middle Ages and has been called "the mother of all German churches". It is one of the largest Gothic structures ever built, and its size reflects its power - it is the seat of the Primate of Germany. The Cathedral was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1996, and today you can see the relics of the Three Magi, and climb the south tower for a spectacular view of the city and the Rhine.

The Chocolate Museum
One of the most popular attractions on Cologne city breaks is the superb Chocolate Museum, where you are greeted at the door by the wonderful smell of its celebrated subject matter. The city was once home to one of the world's largest chocolate factories - a tour of the museum is an indulgently interactive experience as you learn about the history of chocolate and its journey from bean to bar.

Museum Ludwig
The Museum Ludwig, next door to the cathedral, is home to a world class collection of modern art, including works by Andy Warhol.

Old Town
Cologne's Old Town, which has been carefully restored to preserve its pre-war appearance, is also a joy to discover. It spreads from just south of the Cathedral to the bank of the Rhine. Here you can admire the tall and narrow pastel-coloured houses, set out along the Old Town's winding streets, as you wander to the Rhine Promenade for a stroll along the river.

The local brew
There are many traditional brewery taverns close to the Old Town, all of which serve Kölsch beer - brewed only in Cologne. You may wish to visit at least one of these to sample the beer for yourself.

Documentation Centre
The history of the Third Reich in Cologne is on display in the Documentation Centre. In the basement of the building was the local Gestapo prison, where inmates were interrogated. Inscriptions on the basement cell walls offer a poignant reminder of the emotional and physical pain experienced by the prisoners.
