Historic towns, mountain scenery and the Harz Railway
Experience the festivities of Germany at Christmas in the picturesque setting of the Harz Mountains. After a special Christmas Eve dinner you will be taken on an enchanting torch-lit walk, with plenty of mulled wine available for keeping warm. Christmas in the Harz Mountains is also celebrated with a journey on the region's famous narrow-gauge railway which passes dramatic mountains and scenic valleys. The many other highlights of this charming festive break include the chance to explore the stalls of Goslar's Christmas Market, where you will find a variety of seasonal goods including gingerbread, handmade gifts and bratwurst.
Day 1 - London to BrusselsWe leave St Pancras International by Eurostar for Brussels and our overnight stay at the 3* Park Inn. This evening you are free for dinner - perhaps visit the famous Grand Place which hosts one of Belgium's finest Christmas Markets.
Day 2 - Brussels to Hahnenklee
Today we travel by rail over the border into Germany, travelling via Cologne to Hanover. Here we are picked up and transferred to Hahnenklee, which is located high above Goslar, set in the snow-capped Harz Mountains and surrounded by lush forests of spruce. We check into our hotel the 3* Ramada Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. Enjoying a welcome drink on arrival, we dine together this evening.
Day 3 - Christmas Eve at leisure
Today is at leisure to relax and enjoy the hotel's facilities. You may choose to further explore the outstanding scenery of the area. In the afternoon we taste German specialities with coffee, gingerbread and Stollen cake in the hotel. This evening we celebrate the festive season with dinner before setting off together on a torch lit walk with mulled wine.
Day 4 - Christmas Day
After a leisurely morning, we enjoy a Christmas Day lunch with a turkey roast. The afternoon is free to explore Hahnenklee. If you're feeling energetic, why not take a walk through the forests up Bocksberg Mountain for views over the beautiful surrounding area? Alternatively you may choose to take a trip into the mountains by cable car.

Day 5 - Boxing Day in GoslarOn Boxing Day we embark upon an excursion to charming, unspoilt Goslar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with many historic buildings, majestic churches, over 1,500 half-timbered houses and a superb setting for one of the most charming Christmas Markets in the whole of Germany. Day 6 - The Harz Railway
Today we enjoy a trip on the Harz narrow-gauge railway, which carries us past dramatic mountain ranges and through wooded valleys on a journey into the heart of the spectacular Harz area. We travel by coach to Wernigerode, a town complete with a hilltop Gothic castle and a myriad of half-timbered buildings, where we pick up the vintage train which steams through the beautiful scenery of the Harz National Park to Eisfelder Talmühle, from where we return to Hahnenklee. Day 7 - Homeward boundWe are picked up from our hotel and transferred to Hanover, where we catch our onward service via Cologne to Brussels. We change here to the Eurostar which whisks us back to St Pancras International in London. (B)
