See in the exciting festive season on the shores of stunning Lake Lucerne. From our base in Hergiswil, we enjoy an excursion by rail to Lucerne, with its magnificent Chapel Bridge. We spend Christmas Day on our excursion to the summit of Mount Rigi, taking a mountain railway to the breathtaking views at the top. We also get to enjoy a fantastic scenic journey on the iconic Glacier Express on Boxing Day and the following day we absorb the festive atmosphere with a wonderful horse-drawn carriage ride in Engelberg. Celebrate in Lake Lucerne at Christmas for a truly magical holiday.

Days 1-2 - To Strasbourg and Hergiswil
We depart St Pancras International, travelling on the high-speed Eurostar service to Paris. In the French capital we transfer between stations and continue on to Strasbourg, where we stay for the night at the 3* Ibis Strasbourg Gare. After time to perhaps explore the Christmas Markets, we leave Strasbourg on Day 2, and travel across the Swiss border via Basel to Hergiswil, on the edge of Lake Lucerne. Here we stay for the next five nights at the 4* Seehotel Pilatus, situated on the lake shore.

Day 3 - Lucerne on Christmas Eve
It is just a short train journey from our base in Hergiswil to beautiful Lucerne, where we spend the day. A delightful city thanks to its attractive lakeside setting, historic buildings and variety of shops, Lucerne is a pleasure to explore. Why not visit the Chapel Bridge, or the famous Lion Monument? We return to the hotel in time for our traditional Christmas Eve dinner.
Day 4 - Mount Rigi on Christmas Day
On Christmas Day our excursion takes us into the mountains surrounding Lake Lucerne. We begin by taking a boat cruise across Lake Lucerne to Vitznau, where we board the Mount Rigi Railway to Rigi's summit. We admire the magnificent views at Rigi's peak before descending on the opposite side of the mountain to Arth Goldau. From here we make the journey back to Hergiswil by local train. This evening, we enjoy dinner in the hotel.
Day 5 - The Glacier Express
We embark on a morning departure today, as we travel to Chur to board the world-famous Glacier Express, affectionately known as the slowest 'express' train in the world. The train makes its way along the broad valley before it starts to climb through snowy pastures and woodland. The train then snakes and spirals its way towards the Oberalp Pass, the highest point of the route at 6,670 feet (2,033m), before it descends to Andermatt, where we leave the Glacier Express. We then take the beautiful pass that leads us back north once more to Lake Lucerne, where we return to Hergiswil.
Day 6 - Engelberg carriage ride
We journey by train to the mountain resort of Engelberg, from where we enjoy a traditional horse-drawn carriage ride through the surrounding snowy scenery, below the glistening peaks of the Alps. Back in Engelberg, you are free.
Days 7-8 - Hergiswil to London
We leave Hergiswil this morning, and travel by train to Mulhouse, where we stay at the 4* Mercure Mulhouse Centre. On Day 8 we take the high-speed TGV service to Paris, where we connect with the Eurostar back to London.

One of the highlights of the tour is a day on board the Glacier Express, which journeys across the Alps through scenic valleys, charming meadows and delightful towns. Relax in comfort as you gaze at magnificent views from your carriage window. The Glacier Express travels through Switzerland from Chur and climbs the Oberalp Pass before descending in to Andermatt. The train has panorama carriages for great views of the passing scenery and also a restaurant car.
