Tour highlights

  • Remagen
  • Excursion on the Kasbachtal Railway
  • Excursion on the Vulkan Express
  • Day 1 - London to Remagen

    Remagen

    We depart St Pancras International on a Eurostar service to Brussels, continuing on to Cologne by high-speed train. A local train then takes us along the banks of the majestic Rhine to Remagen, where we check into the 3* Hotel Pinger, our base for the next three nights. We dine together in the hotel this evening. (D)

  • Day 2 - The Kasbachtal Railway

    The Kasbachtal Railway

    Our included excursion today takes us to Linz-am-Rhein for a journey on board the heritage Kasbachtalbahn Railway. We leave Remagen by river ferry to Linz, a pretty town of half-timbered houses, located a few kilometres south-east of Remagen. Boarding the Kasbachtalbahn, we enjoy a return journey from Linz to Kalenborn, a 5.5 mile (8.9 kilometre) section of track that is one of the steepest in Germany, with an overall height difference of 984 feet (300 metres). The standard-gauge Kasbachtalbahn is hauled by a 1950s Uerdinger Railbus engine. On our return to Linz, we make our way back to Remagen. The rest of your day is free to spend at leisure, exploring Remagen in your own time. Maybe take a stroll along the town's Rhine promenade and admire the rugged beauty of the landscape. Alternatively you may like to visit the Peace Museum at the famous Bridge in Remagen, which was strategically taken by US Forces in 1945 as the last remaining intact bridge, despite German attempts to destroy it. We dine together in the hotel this evening. (B,D)

  • Day 3 - The Vulkan Express

    The Vulkan Express

    Today's excursion takes us along the Rhine by regional train to Brohl, the starting point for our journey on the Brohltal Railway - affectionately known as the 'Vulkan Express'. The journey begins deep in the valley, travelling along one of the most scenic valleys of the Rhine, up through the Eifel range to Engeln. Having first opened in 1901, the 11 mile (18 kilometre) journey takes one and a half hours as the locomotives on the Vulkan Express reach a speed of 12mph (20km/h). This leaves plenty of time to admire the views, as we travel through the verdant countryside. As we head across viaducts, through one tunnel and up a 1-in-20 incline to reach the village of Engeln, we take in castles and also see many dramatic rock formations created by volcanic activity, which gave the line its nickname. We arrive in the village of Engeln, having climbed around 1,310 feet (399 metres). After free time to explore we return to Brohl and continue on to Remagen. We enjoy our final dinner together in the hotel this evening. (B,D)

  • Day 4 - Remagen to London

    Eurostar

    This morning we depart Remagen by local train, and make our way northwards along the Rhine Valley to Cologne. Here we join the high-speed rail service for Brussels, where we connect with the Eurostar to London, arriving into St Pancras International. (B)

    B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner
    These meals, where shown, are included in the price of your holiday.
