The Christmas Markets of Luxembourg & Trier 2013
By train to two Christmas Markets in two different countries
Meander through rustic Christmas markets whilst indulging in festive treats on a charming rail break that combines the medieval city of Trier with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. As the scents of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts fill the air you can marvel at the Christmas tree lit by 16,000 lights at Place de Paris in Luxembourg, or shop for German delicacies in Trier. Roman ruins, medieval castles and picturesque scenery also inspire guests to visit the regions. Discover why the best things come in small packages for yourself by visiting Luxembourg Christmas Markets on one of our festive rail tours.
Day 1 - Journey to Luxembourg
We depart St Pancras International by Eurostar for Brussels. In the Belgian capital we join a train to Luxembourg, which takes us southwards through the charming Ardennes region on its way to the border. On our arrival in Luxembourg, we transfer to the 4* Novotel Luxembourg Kirchberg, a superb modern hotel located close to the European institutions to the north east of the historical Old Town, just a short bus ride away. This evening, we dine together in our hotel.
Day 2 - Guided tour of Luxembourg
After a leisurely start, we meet up for a coach transfer to the city centre for a guided walking tour of this lovely compact city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, seated on top of a rocky promontory. Following the tour, you are free to explore Luxembourg at your own pace, and perhaps visit the colourful Christmas Markets. During Advent, the city hosts two Christmas Markets, one on Place d'Armes, and one on Place de Paris, where the Christmas tree is beautifully illuminated and decorated. Wooden stalls offer stollen cake, homemade gifts, Mettwurscht (a local sausage speciality) and schnapps! As you wander around the festive chalets you may like to enjoy a cup of warming mulled wine. This evening you are free to dine in a restaurant of your choice, or perhaps sample the local fayre which can be found on the Christmas Market stalls.
Day 3 - Trier Christmas Market
Today we travel by coach to Trier, which is located just over the border in Germany, on the banks of the Moselle River. The city of Trier claims to be the oldest in Germany, and it was founded over 2,000 years ago. The city features stunning Roman architecture, such as the imposing Porta Nigra, the largest Roman Gate north of the Alps. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Porta Nigra is not to be missed.
Trier's Christmas Market, one of the best in Germany, is held every year against the charming backdrop of medieval Hauptmarkt Square and the impressive Cathedral. Around 100 festively decorated little wooden huts offer a wide range of arts, crafts, toys and much more. You are free to wander around the market at your leisure, in search of ideal Christmas presents for friends and family. You may want to warm yourself up, as the Germans do, with a steaming mug of glühwein, accompanied by some roasted chestnuts or a delicious bratwurst. On our return to Luxembourg, we come together for a farewell dinner in the hotel.
Day 4 - Luxembourg to London
Departing Luxembourg, we take the rail service northwards through Luxembourg and into Belgium, to Brussels. In the Belgian capital we connect with our Eurostar service back to St Pancras International in London.
