York Mystery Plays 2012

The city of York presents the fantastic York Mystery Plays in 2012. From 2nd to 27th August, the city's Museum Gardens will host the plays, performed by well-known professional actors and a huge cast of local amateur actors from across the city.
The Mystery Plays tell stories from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, from Creation through to the Last Judgement. York Mystery Plays have been performed in York many times since the Middle Ages - the first recorded performance of the York Mystery Plays was in 1376. The plays were traditionally divided into a number of small pageants; each pageant was performed by one of the many Craft Guilds of York. At this time, the York Mystery Plays were performed on the back of carts and wagons, which travelled through the city in a long procession, stopping at various places for the cast to present their own play to crowds and assembled audiences.
